The Nesselande centre will become the hub of this Vinex neighbourhood on the Zevenhuizerplas (lake). When the lake has been doubled in size, as planned, this part of the scheme will have substantial recreation significance for the region. The starting point is an authentic bathing resort with recreation and cultural amenities where one can live, work and enjoy leisure activities in a relaxed manner, revelling in the abundant greenery and views out across the lake.

The multiple assignment offers the opportunity to develop a single consistent architectural vision for the whole project. It is essential to unite the virtues of the various subplans in a concept which radiates homogeneity, which conforms to the scale of this kind of centre, and which simultaneously enables the required differentiation in living environments. In order to combine these contrasting elements, the idea of ‘the Green Carpet’ was conceived. This is spread out across the entire surface area as a binding element. Where necessary, it can be lifted in order to install amenities underneath. A network of informal routes is constructed above the folds of the Carpet, as well as a system of public spaces that bring structure to the ground-level layout. Between these lies the Plaza, which forms the link between the beach, the boulevard, the amenities, and the residential area. In addition, the boulevard is planned to accommodate a water feature, a boardwalk, and houses-cum-studios.

Open and built-up strips are planned on the Carpet, the latter accommodating the residential programme. They will be given shape by the lie of the Carpet and by the required differentiation. By assigning each strip its own flexible construction, varying in height and depth, the centre will acquire a marvellous skyline.
